Lactate Threshold Test

Last night during my 6 mile run, I decided to try out my Lactate Threshold Pace since I'll have to run it for 4 miles on the first week of my marathon schedule. According to Advanced Marathoning, your Lactate Threshold pace should be similar to your half marathon pace, so I shot for a 7:50 pace for two miles. I accomplished this, but I didn't think it would be so hard. Granted, I ran that pace for my last half marathon in August, and I'm not in as good of shape, but I was a little bummed that I looked like I had just gone through labor when I got off the treadmill. (Actually, I might have looked a little better on the hospital bed.) I'm going to shoot for a 3 mile 7:47 lactate threshold pace next week and see how I feel. Hopefully I was just having a bad day, but I kind of regret just logging miles instead of doing speed work during this time that I've been building a base again. I opted for just logging miles because I've wanted to save my energy for my 18 week schedule and I haven't wanted to get hurt. Maybe I'll have to readjust my goals.

  1. I jut signed up for LA. I am just starting back after a year off from racing...but I did still train...just not as hard. It is very frustrating to see how tour speed slips away. Don't worry, you will get it back.

  3. You should get your fitness level back pretty quickly. I still think it's good to run 'just miles' now and then to give the body a break.

  4. Hey! Thanks for the comment to my post the other day. You asked what schedule I use...I actually have a coach so the schedule is geared to me and how each week goes. I don't know what I'm running each week until Sunday when he sends me my schedule after seeing my recap of the week. But it's all about balancing easy and hard runs. And the long runs are run slower, to get you used to being on your feet. I didn't use him last year and I can tell you I felt far more burnt out training last year. I feel great this year!!

  5. lol about "looking better on the hospital bed". whatever ;)

    threshold pace is SO TOUGH. i have found that i run it much "easier" in a race - maybe you can find a few short races to do and practice threshold pace in? 5k's and 10k's with an easy warmup/cooldown and hit your threshold pace during the actual race! the crowd and competition make the pace seem much easier (in my opinion).
